Lady Wolves win three of four

Clutch Chloe. Davis junior Chloe Summer buried a huge three-pointer with just 56 seconds left in the game to put the Lady Wolves on top for good in a 51-48 win over Purcell in the Davis home opener on Dec. 8.

The Davis girls basketball team turned a season-opening loss into a winning record in the second week of play. After beating Purcell 51-48 in the home opener on Dec. 8, the Lady Wolves won three of four games in the Comet Classic Tournament at Velma-Alma Dec. 10-12.
Davis 51, Purcell 48
Davis overwhelmed its visitors in the first quarter to grab an early nine-point advantage. Chloe Summers got the Lady Wolves on the board just 11 seconds into the game, nailing an open three pointer.
Then, Davis went on a 7-0 run to close the quarter and open up its advantage.
Summers started the second quarter just like the first, draining a three-pointer in the opening minute. Then, however, the Lady Dragons came roaring back. Back-to-back three pointers keyed an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 17-13. After that, it was Davis’ turn. A 7-0 run could’ve been even bigger if not for 1-for-3 free throw shooting. That would be a more significant theme later.
By halftime, Davis held a commanding, 25-15 lead. The third quarter though, belonged to Purcell. Four three pointers keyed the comeback to cut a 10-point lead down to two, 34-32 to start the fourth.
The Lady Wolves may have glad the third quarter was over, but the fourth started even worse. Three more long balls helped Purcell pile up 11 of the first 13 points in the frame to claim a 43-36 lead with 5:55 to play in the game.
Then came clutch time for Davis. Steals and offensive rebounds helped the home team grind out seven straight points to tie the game at 43 with 3:28 to play.
Purcell made four straight free throws to go up 47-45 with 2:55 left, but then it was all Lady Wolves. Davis got a layup and then another big three by Summers to regain the lead. Then it was all free throws.
The Lady Dragons’ hot streak from the three point line ended, but they stayed in the game due to 3 of 14 free throw shooting in the fourth quarter by the Lady Wolves. Davis led 50-47 after the big three pointer from Summers and had three chances to make it a two-possession game at the charity stripe. Davis, however went 0-for-5 in that stretch.
Purcell hit a free throw with just eight seconds left to make it 50-48. Then Grace Murphy hit one of two to make a three point lead with six seconds left.
Purcell got a shot up, but missed the game-tying three-pointer at the buzzer.

It was an issue that Davis had improved on for three quarters, going 11-for-18 at the stripe in that stretch. Then in the fourth, the Lady Wolves missed four of five foul shots, any one of which would’ve won the game. Then, in overtime, Davis missed six of eight free throws and lost a heartbreaker.

Davis 48, Wayne 27
The two themes in the Dec. 12 tournament finale against Wayne were dominating defense and Pruitt in the paint. Wayne managed just three points in the opening quarter and then rallied for 14 in the second to cut the Lady Wolves’ lead to 21-17 at halftime.
After intermission though, Pruitt made eight field goals to pace the Lady Wolves to a 27-10 second half. Davis smothered Wayne in the final eight minutes, holding the Lady Bulldogs scoreless to secure the victory.
With the wins, Davis improved to 3-2 on the season as they set themselves for a 2020-kind of week. With the boys team shut down due to the virus and school happening from home starting on Tuesday, the Davis girls could get a feel of higher levels of basketball, waiting around to play the featured game in the evening.
The Lady Wolves were set to host Lexington on Tuesday and Sulphur on Friday as the last games before Christmas. With no boys teams playing, the junior varsity tilts will be at 5:30 and the varsity at 7 p.m. each night.
