Braeden Hefley, a senior at Davis High School, competed and earned the S3DA Western National Champion in young female adult Traditional Bare Bow Open Targets and young female adult Traditional Bare Bow 3D Targets at the Western Outdoor Target National Championship on Aug. 4-6 in Palisade, Colo.
Along with her plaques, she earned several letters of intent and scholarships for her first place standings.
Scholastic 3-D Archery recently held the second annual Western 3D National Championship and the first annual Western Outdoor Target National Championship in beautiful Palisade, at the Cameo Shooting and Education Complex.
Palisade is in the heart of Mesa County and is a paradise for outdoor lovers with many activities to choose from including, but not limited, to camping, hiking, wildlife viewing and of course, spectacular views.
S3DA National Competition Coordinator, Chris McDonald said: “The Western National S3DA Championships was a great event to witness. You can describe the scenery but that won’t do it justice; it’s absolutely breathtaking. It was very educational for me to see the similarities and differences between the Eastern and Western National S3DA Events. All stakeholders were excited to be able to award Western National Shooter of the Year to the archers.”
Over one-hundred student archers from across the United States met to compete for the title of “Western National Champion” in their respective class and division. All archers that shot the 2022 Western S3DA Indoor, Western 3D and Western Outdoor Target National Championships qualified for the Inaugural S3DA Western National Shooter of the Year. Archers arrived Aug. 5 to compete in the qualification rounds of the Western Outdoor Target National Championship. After all archers completed their qualification rounds, they were seeded into a bracket based on their qualification scores to compete in head-to-head elimination matches on Aug. 6. At the conclusion of the elimination matches on Aug. 6, archers switched over to the 3D format and shot the Western 3D National Championship.
Archers were dedicated to earning a podium placement as they battled high temperatures and extremely low humidity throughout the weekend.
From nerve-racking head-to-head elimination rounds in Outdoor Target to some very difficult and challenging 3D targets in the 3D competition, these youth archers gave it their all.
