Davis Wins Two Team Titles at Stratford

By Jeff Mapes
Track season opened for the Davis teams on March 29, and both won their respective divisions at the Stratford Meet. The Lady Wolves accumulated 148 points to claim their title. The Wolves topped 11 other squads with 102 points.
“We started off really well. Both teams, both boys and girls,” Wolves coach Hunter Fullerton said. “We placed first in a lot of events. We were pretty surprised for even how windy it was. We battled it really well.”
“First track meet of the year for us a week after Spring Break, and not having a whole lot of practice time, we went and competed and did really well,” Lady Wolves coach Jeff Brown said. “I’m really pleased with their effort.”
Kensley Barnes placed first in four events including two individually. The junior won the 300-meter hurdles in 53.01 and the long jump in 14-09.25. She was the second leg of the 4X100 relay team that won in 53.76 and a member of the 4X200 relay team that took first in 1.57.51.
Barnes joined Shelby Courtney, Lily Hefley and Tylisha McDonald on the 4X100 team. The same four comprised the 4X200.
“All the kids competed well and ran hard but Kensley finished the day with four gold medals,” Brown said. “You can’t do much better than that.”
Lily Hefley, McDonald, Alivia Parsons and Jakobi LaNoy combined to win the 4X400 relay in 4.51.29.
“Our 4X100, for the first track meet, was a pretty good time,” Brown said. “We need to be able to drop it by two seconds by the end of the year. I’m pretty sure we can do that.”
Alivia Parsons was first in the 200-meter dash in 29.58. LaNoy won the 800-meter run in 2.54.46 and placed second in the long jump at 13-08.75.
Junior Cassidy Parsons placed second in the 200 in 30.00. Lola Thompson finished fifth in the shot put with a toss of 20-06.75.
Kara Busey was fifth in the 400 in 1.21.50 and fifth in the long jump in 11-06.00.
The Wolves’ 4X100 relay team (Dakota Carter, Seth Knapp, Dax Owens and Trey Melton) took first in 45.29. The 4X200 team (Carter, Jake Hefley, Knapp and Owens) also won first in 1.36.43.
“Seth and Jake, being our seniors, leading our younger guys,” Fullerton said. “Helping our freshmen and trying to lead them along.”
Carter claimed the 200 in 23.78. The junior was also third in the 100 in 11.77. Knapp won the 100 in 11.65.
Logan Gibson recorded new personal records for the events he entered. The junior won the discus throw with a toss of 126-10 and placed second in the shot put at 43-10.25.
“Logan had a really good meet,” Fullerton said. “It’s really neat to see him do well in shot and discus. His goal is to go to state this year and he, by far, had the best day.”
The 4X800 relay team (Jake Hefley, Dalton Johnson, Levi Pullen and Asher Waters) was third in 11.59.36. Fisher Smith finished fourth in the discus (96-03) and fifth in the shot put (39-03.75).
Davis is scheduled to compete at Okemah April 5. Brown and Fullerton may decide to enter both teams in the Sulphur Meet the same day.
