Davis Student Dies in Car Accident

A fatality collision on May 10 claimed the life of 18 year-old Averiee Osmundson on May 10 around 7:36 a.m. on Foothill Road, .4 miles west of United States Highway 77, approximately 3 miles north of Springer in Carter County.
Osmundson, a senior at Davis High School, was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained from the collision. She was transported by the Oklahoma State Medical Examiner’s Office to their facility in Oklahoma City.
Trooper Brian Adkinson’s report states Osmundson was traveling eastbound on Foothill Road when she departed roadway to the left and over corrected reentering the roadway before overturning an unknown amount of times. She was ejected approximately 78 feet from where the vehicle came to rest. Seat belts were equipped but not in use. Airbags were equipped and deployed.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
Davis Public Schools released a statement on May 11 announcing Osumundson’s passing. The school’s crisis team was ready and available for students on Monday to help support and guide students and staff through the loss of their classmate.
At the School Board meeting Monday night, Davis High School Principal Trey Owens said that Monday was a good day. He said the day started with the Senior/Pre-K graduation walk. “This class is really, really special. They are resilient. They are so tough,” Owens said. “They have been through so much this year. The highest of the highs and the absolute lows.” Mentioning students in the class losing parents and now a classmate, telling the school board they should be proud of how they have handled the year. Ending his address to the school board Owens said “You guys know are kids are there for each other. It’s a family atmosphere. That’s what it felt like at school.”
Gilbert went on to say that school administration met on Sunday night to discuss the week for students and staff . “The adults really rallied today. They take exceptional care of our kids. I told them today, that resilience and toughness our kids show here is taught at our school,” Gilbert said.
Praising Owens, Gilbert said “I’m proud of Trey today, I don’t give him kudos probably often enough. But, he really stepped up. I heard him say something to the kids – make memories today. It’s still okay to make memories. That was important and something we all need to think aobut.”
Davis Public Schools Superientendent Jamea Gilbert said that the goal this week is to honor Osmundson.
Friday night, the senior class will wear turquoise lapel pins (Osumndson’s favorite color).
Osmundson’s family will be at graduation to accept her diploma.
