“Labor Day weekend is one of the busiest and collision prone times to be on the roadways,” said Trooper Mike Shanholtzer, Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) Impaired Driving Liason. “Over the 2021 Labor Day Holiday, 479 collisions were reported statewide.”
The breakdown is as follows:
11 fatality collisions with 12 total deaths (at least 2 were in result of drugs/alcohol)
155 collisions with injury (244 total people injured)
53 collision were determined to be related to Drug/alcohol use
A large number of crashes occurred on Friday evening and during the day time hours on Saturday and Sunday of Labor Day weekend.
Most crashes occurred on Saturday afternoon/early evening. “The majority of fatalities took place in the overnight or early morning hours throughout the weekend,” said Trooper Shanholtzer. “Please stay aware and be responsible to keep yourself and others safer on the roads this holiday weekend.”
